The road here was bad. But I did it in one day - I hired a motorbike driver from
the border town of Mpondwe, and headed east, but it was not long until his rear
tire got flat and we were stuck in the jungle. A passing truck offered a few
tools and some glue to patch it together - but before I could decide what to do,
two trucks packed with Congolese soldiers stopped and told me to get in. They were concerned about my security, and took me on the long ride into Beni. And a long ride it was - perhaps 100 kilometres from the border, on a very bad dirt road. Trees loomed above us, stalks of grass taller than our vehicle as well. We were in deep wilderness. There were small villages, all without power, and massive trucks grinding against the hard dirt roads. The next morning I secured transport to Bunia, by aircraft; there was little going on in the overland transport department it seemed, so I took the risk, bit the cost, and hopped on the plane. And north we went.
